I. What is a back support belt?

Back support belts otherwise known as back belts are specially designed belts that give added support for the back and abdominal muscles. These back support belts are helpful in preventing back injuries caused by improper weight lifting.

Basically, these back support belts provide support and stability to the spine. It can aid in reducing the effects of strenuous activities to the spine and help promote proper ways of lifting, bending and pushing techniques. These can usually be adjusted to their belly size. The compression caused by the belt reduces back pain and relieves pressure from the bladder, resulting to an increase in blood flow to the pelvis.

All these back support belts have different shapes and designs but are used to reduce back pains usually in the lumbar area. The lumbar pertains to the abdominal section ion the torso between the diaphragm and the pelvis. This is usually called as lower spine and the belts associated with it are called lumbar back support belts.

These back support belts could either be for lumbar or full back support. Lumbar back support belts targets areas for lifting and bending. They have straps to adjust its tightness depending on one’s preference. The full back support, on the other hand covers the entire back from the shoulders down to the waist. These are usually user for recovery from injuries and for correcting posture.

· Know its materials

Choose a belt that’s firm and elastic enough to support the back well. Materials like plastic or nylon are durable and long lasting making them suitable for the belt. Some belts with added steel rods may also be considered.

· Thickness and size

People should consider their body size in choosing their back support belts. Belts with right thickness and size ensure the best support needed in performing one’s daily routine like lifting and bending.

IV. Does it really work?

Using these kinds of products may help people with strenuous daily routine like lifting. It reduces the pain in the back, giving them relief. However, reduction of pain is different from no pain at all. These products may work but for a short term period only. While using these products it is advised not to depend on these back support belts alone to ease back pains.

Companies manufacturing back support belts claim that their products will surely help reduce back pains. Before using it, seek for medical advice on what type of product to use. If one experiences back pains, alternative treatments from a physician may also be considered.
